Sandringham Golf Club is a private club whose members play on a public course that is operated by a private entity - Sandringham Golf Links. The Club conducts a competition every Saturday morning, its members hitting off from first light until midday or thereabouts. The Club's weekly competition is conducted in three grades with a prize for each grade, and a prize for the best net score. There are also prizes for nearest the pin on the 3rd and 10th holes. In addition to the regular stroke, par and stableford events there are a number of major events each year. Some of the major events carry an additional prize in the form of a perpetual trophy donated by one of our former members. The Club also conducts monthly medal events for which a Club Medal or VGL medal is awarded in addition to the regular prize. Although we have more than 170 members our competition field each week numbers around one-third of that and this makes the competitions attractive to all those who are able to compete.
The Club is a member of the Victorian Golf League (the VGL) which is a federation of nearly 40 private clubs playing on public courses. The VGL itself runs numerous events, including Pennant competitions for scratch teams and handicap teams, as well as for seniors and veterans. Over the years, the Club has featured prominently in the Pennant competitions and were winners again in the scratch Pennant competition during 2009. We expect to field strong teams again in 2010.
Membership of the Club does not provide free golf to members. We play on the course by booking a tee time and paying the same green fees as any other member of the community. With a nominal joining fee of $90 and an annual joining fee of only $90, this is an inexpensive way to enjoy regular competitive golf with a handicap that is recognised nationally and internationally. Our low membership costs make competition golf affordable for players who only have time for weekend golf and don't need or want to pay the very high cost of 5 day or 7 day membership of a private club. Leaving aside the very affordable annual subscription of less than $2 per week, our low cost of membership makes it a truism that "if you don't play you don't pay."
Another very important aspect of membership is that it comes with $20 million dollar public liability insurance cover for each Club member as protection for damage or injury to others while playing golf. This cover came into effect from 1 July 2009.
Putting all these benefits together it makes sound sense for anyone who is keen to play golf in a competitive but very friendly and low-cost environment to join Sandringham Golf Club. Just point to the "Join" tab on the top right of this page, print the membership application form and post it with a cheque for $180 to the address shown on the form. You'll be very glad you did!
